Update

Fri, 05/31/2013 - 21:52 -- BlueWinds

So, it's been a while, but I figured I should give everyone a heads up on the status of the project here.

The offbeatr campaign now has enough votes - thanks everyone who stopped by! On the other hand, Offbeatr requires a deposit before you can launch a project, and until my next paycheck comes in, I can't afford it. Hopefully in the next week or so here. Being broke sucks, and there's only so much rice I can eat. ^^;;

With regards to work on the actual game, I have been focusing on version two - the demo I released earlier isn't updated (and won't be, since one of the rewards for support is early access to beta versions), but I've been making good progress on the engine. The new version has a very clean API which will make creating new content easy, and I'm very happy with the elegant solution I came up with for the interface between "game data" - your history, the choices you've made, the current game state - and "content", ie actions and events that will occur in the future.

Nerdy programming stuff most people don't care about. Here, have a picture of a naked woman instead.

Sneak-peak of Version 2

Fri, 05/17/2013 - 21:46 -- BlueWinds

So, what have I been up to for the last two weeks?

This is what I've been up to.

Take a look. Let me know what you think. Though there are no actions coded in yet, it's a 90% functional game engine, not just a mockup of a UI.

Anyway, if you like the demo and want to see more, stop by the Offbeatr campaign and give it a vote (and chip in a few dollars, when it gets enough votes). The money will go to a good cause - commissioning a bit of original art, paying for a bit of graphics design work, and letting me focus on the game instead of my day-job for a few months.

Unemployed and pleased

Sun, 05/05/2013 - 00:34 -- BlueWinds

I quit my job today.

Well, not the whole thing. I'm still a freelance web developer. But I've spent seven months working with one client, and I realized that in that time, not once have they complimented my work. Last week I sent an email explaining that I'd made a change and their site was now 5-10 times faster. No response, just a complaint about a different small bug.

I realized, this evening, that I hated working. It was making me depressed, and sapping my energy for fun projects like BrothelS.im. So I quit, and now I feel energized and excited again. It's that simple.

So, anyway... onward ho! Expect a new girl for the game in the next few days. And if anyone needs a good web developer (I do Javascript, CSS/HTML, PHP, Python, Drupal, many others), let me know, 'cause I'm in the market. ;)

Version 0.6.1 and an exciting opportunity

Mon, 04/29/2013 - 16:22 -- BlueWinds

So... a new version number. This isn't as large an update as some others, but there's still some new content and code fixes. And it's been long enough since 0.6.0 that I felt like a new number was in order.

  • New Saber content - there's... a lot of text in this - roughtly 4000 words.
  • Fixes for certain missions, and various minor textual modifications.
  • A new included webserver, which should make it easier to run the game locally on a variety of platforms.

Yeah... not much, compared to the usual update size. I can do whatever the hell I want with version numbers. ;P

Usual disclaimer, please report bugs, blah, blah.

KICKSTARTER (sort of)

Wait, what? Yes, you read that correctly! Read on below.

Update

Tue, 04/23/2013 - 21:50 -- BlueWinds

So, a bit of an update here. Not much progress to report game-wise, though work on some content for Saber and the addition of a new girl continue at a slow pace.

Partially, this can be laid at the feet of the fact that I'm just coming out of a depressive phase - not much interest in anything, regardless of topic - and partially on some life changes I'm planning out (nothing concrete happening until July, but it's still a big step forward for me personally).

Version 0.6.0 Released

Fri, 04/12/2013 - 15:34 -- BlueWinds

Tada! It's been a long time in coming, but it's finally here. Highlights of the new version include:

  • Smoother upgrade experience (less refreshing required to get the most recent version of files)
  • Completely reworked loan system - only the first two payments are written, but they have story now. If you continue an existing game these events will still trigger.
  • Choose a gender and name for your character (and you don't have to start a new game to do so)!
  • Prostitution profit / refusal / reputation system reworked. Not too much of a visible difference, but money is a bit harder to make, and refusal is much less random.
  • Mana has a new talk variant.
  • New images! Mostly for Saber and Jill, but also sprinkled all over the place.
  • Hiring girls costs more the more girls you have - Guild taxes and whatnot. The second building you buy will also be much more expensive.
  • A great many buxfixes. I believe this will be most stable "initial release" to date.

Version 0.5.2 Released

Mon, 03/18/2013 - 12:37 -- BlueWinds

Hello! After some more testing and bugfixes (not to mention a goodly amount of new content), I present to you... a new version. There are some technical changes, but mostly this is a content release.

  • New girl, Holo the Wise Wolf. She currently has two special events and a departure mission - expect a few more things from her in the next release.
  • Dozens of new images, at least one for every girl (Jill is about 50% new and improved).
  • New place to explore - the Market - and an event with three variants for that location (two of the three variants require a very slutty girl to trigger)
  • Renamed Dark Magician Girl to Mana, and added Talking variants specific to her
  • Dropped support for loading saves from below version 0.5
  • Final message to signal that the tutorial is over.
  • API improvement for checking user-selected options for actions.
  • Files are now loaded dynamically using AJAX, rather than static <script> tags in index.html. If you're developing custom content, see content/girls/girls.js for an example of the new format.
  • Included one-click Java webserver for playing the game locally (to support the above change).

Whew, that's quite a list. If you play the game locally, continue reading below.
